Make a difference by helping the rescue of 2000 Flamingos in Kimberley

 In Blog Posts

On January 28 2019, BirdLife South Africa said that more than 2000 baby flamingos were rescued at the Kamfers Dam outside Kimberley. Kamfers dam is a crucial breeding ground for the lesser flamingo species in Southern Africa but due to the little rain, a severe drought and failing sewage infrastructure in the area, the birthing season has turned into a desperate rescue mission.

Many of the chicks on the dam’s purpose-built island were abandoned by their parents, prompting residents and rescue organisations to intervene to save them from dehydration and starvation. Saam Staan Kimberley, the SPCA, BirdLife and other organisations have created rescue areas where the chicks are being monitored and fed by volunteers.

This crisis is drawing national attention to the lack of infrastructure that needs to sustain the large flamingo population. Conservationists continue to monitor the chicks and require assistance with donations to both Saam Staan Kimberley, the SPCA and BirdLife.

“The parents are not able to feed and protect the chicks as they normally would. It’s a big problem as the water level is dropping every day,” says Craig van Rensburg, an administrator of community organisation Saam Staan Kimberley.

The worst is not over, as the chances that there will need to be more rescues is high with the incoming rain. The chicks who are old enough to walk by themselves will be able to take shelter however younger chicks who would typically be protected by their mothers, will now be exposed to the rain and will likely die.

“The community in Kimberley has pulled together by offering their time as well as making donations to helping the chicks. There are limited resources to cater for such a large number of chicks in distress which is why we are challenging businesses nationwide to donate. Every donation will help the feeding of the chicks – an extensive logistical operation – and will ensure they survive. Well done to the private individuals and Azuka teams down in Kimberley and thank you for your dedication and hard work. – James Guthrie, Azuka Managing Director
